Dawkins has a really interesting thought: if there is no answer to this question of Why, we get to make one up.

I'm a big fan of this notion of self-determination, that perhaps the most exciting thing about this universe is that we thinking beings get to decide what its meaning is.

Yup.

This is one of the reasons I don't like the big religions. Their answers for "why?" are never satisfactory, and I chafe at the idea of some kind of ultimate authority -- especially one that's no smarter than its clergy.
