The german TV in the old days was especially in the ARD a bunch of different broadcasters, every german state has his own TV and Radio Station.
NDR, WDR, BR SR, SWF, RB, SFB, and so on...
To create the program schedule of a whole day all these stations are working together, ARD means "Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Rundfunkanstalten Deutschlands" ahm, "working pool of the broadcasting companies of Germany".
And if a show is over they switched to an other station, and that meant often a break an intermission.
Normally you had a sign picture on the screen, "PAUSE", ok, time to go to make yourself fresh, he he he...
Then they showed to audience little pictures, films, nothing exciting, just a film.
Today: modern technics, digital..., there's no need for an intermission
On Youtube, there are some examples, and I give to you the links.

ARD colour TV was new, everything was black and white, and if a colour show or movie started everyone had to know "FARBE!"
Maybe no one didn't noticed it otherwise.
