School prom cancelled rather than allow lesbian couple

I'm surprised nobody else had linked this article yet.

My wife was just griping about that article this morning. She's from Mississippi and articles like that make everyone in the Deep South look bigoted and racist.

Some of the comments down below the article are pretty negative as well...

I haven't looked at the comments in a couple of days, and by the sounds of things I probably don't want to.

"a lot more people here have biblically based values."

<response type="stock">They don't wear mixed fabrics?</response>

I probably should have looked into whether there were any situations like that with the prom up here. (As it was, I was too awkward to go.) I mean, you'd think that it would be less likely in Massachusetts, to say the least, but assumptions can be deadly. Or at least lead to nasty surprises.

Now I think about it, I wonder if phrases like that will begin to have the opposite effect that what's intended. Similar to how insisting on calling Obama a "socialist" got people fired up in favor of socialism, or at least things called "socialism", could this lead to a backlash against "biblical" ideas, since they seem to invariably be brought up in cases like this?

An interesting wrinkle in one of the comments:
Seal wrote:Kathy G: My belief is that homosexuality is not a choice for some, but is a choice for others. I have seen women who look, act and dress like men. These are the only ones that I'm tolerant of. I feel that they truly were born that way and they should be loved the way they are. My problem is with women who look and act very feminine, possibly been married and had children, and then after many years they decide they want to do the unthinkable. I say they're full of bull#@*&.
In other words, she's more willing to accept an FtM transsexual than someone who's cisgendered, but either bi or deeply repressed. I'm not sure what that attitude would imply, if it were more common.

What that's really saying is that this Seal person has decoupled physical sex from gender identity, but has not decoupled gender identity from sexuality. It's better than having all three coupled together, at least.

Southside Baptist Church Pastor Bobby Crenshaw said he's seen the South portrayed as "backwards" on Web sites discussing the issue, "but a lot more people here have biblically based values."

I think he misspoke. That word "but" should actually be "because". >:3

*sigh* reminds me of the initial freakout the administration had when I showed up to school wearing a skirt... <_<

The students were all okay with it, but they called me into the office... oh lord... I remember...

"So... Mr. _______, is it?"

(quick-fire comeback)
"Actually, Miss ________, if at all possible." :D

(I'm still proud of myself for that!)

and they wanted to call my parents and have me go home and change... And we actually did call my mom's house, but she wasn't at home because she had to work, and neither I nor they had her work number, and they finally sent me back to class. Whereupon, people I hardly ever talked to, asked what they wanted, and when I told them, they were a little bit outraged...

That's what I get for coming from a liberal pocket in the Midwest ^^;;

This story though... It really hurts to see this kind of regression from where I came from. It's just heart-wrenching to watch people act like this.

I think the hate group managed to insult everyone in their statement.

I guess lesbians have the most potent form of cooties that WBC can imagine?

I guess I'm kind of lucky that my most virulently racist recent ancestor died before I could have any kind of meaningful conversation about his views with him. It means I'm skipping out on a level of awkwardness that future generations there are just going to have to bear with.

Also, while WBC's more general thesis about God (as described in the bible) hating everyone is logically sound, the Leviticus quote they trotted out for this case is completely inapplicable. It prohibits only male-on-male homosexuality, not lesbian action.

Then what the hell's their problem, this girl isn't lying with mankind at all, she's a lesbian!!
