Workers Punished in SEC Porn Flap

Postby Wizard CaT » Sat Apr 24, 2010 12:30 pm

KARA SCANNELL wrote:The Securities and Exchange Commission said it has already meted out punishment to a group of employees found to have viewed pornography during work hours.

Thirty-three people at the agency were found to have looked at porn over the past five years, according to a summary of internal probes conducted by the SEC's inspector general. All but two of the investigations were in the past three years.

The report said 17 senior SEC employees, earning between $99,000 and $222,000 a year, were among those who viewed porn on their office computers or on laptops while traveling.

None of the employees were named. The staffers' behavior violated government-wide ethics rules, the report said, and agency spokesman John Nester said each has been "disciplined or is in the process of being disciplined. Some have already been suspended or dismissed."

The SEC employs about 4,000 people.

The disclosures come as the agency faces Republican scrutiny for filing a civil-fraud case against Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and one of its employees at a time when Congress is working to tighten oversight of the financial industry.

California Rep. Darrell Issa, top Republican on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said it was "nothing short of disturbing" that SEC employees viewed porn during the worst financial crisis since the Depression: "This stunning report should make everyone question the wisdom of moving forward with plans to give regulators like the SEC even more widespread authority."

The report said a senior enforcement attorney in a regional office viewed porn during work hours and had a thumb drive containing five hard-core videos; an attorney in Washington, D.C., spent up to eight hours a day watching pornography; and an accountant in a regional office was denied access by the government firewall 16,000 times when he tried to access Web pages containing pornography.

I'm deliriously conflicted by this. What better time is there to view porn but during worldwide financial meltdowns? But at the same time, these are also... augh, so conflicted. What have you done to me?!

Also, the thread title "Workers Punished in SEC Porn Flap" is wonderful. I makes me think that there's kind of a pin-up flap in which Workers are being Punished, and I'm like, "Wow that's kinda hot."

EDIT: Wow, I'm really classying up this forum, aren't I? 8)

Nothing wrong with porn, also nothing wrong with reading the Lord of the Rings... But doing so while you are being paid to do a job is wrong.

Two fifteen minute breaks, and a half hour for lunch, is normal isn't it? But it's still considered 'on the job', especially when you're using your company supplied computer.

You guys are jumping to conclusions, I think; I really doubt these guys were having private day-long orgies at the office. Spending a few minutes refreshing yourself is completely natural, I think, especially if you have a private office.

Eight hours in one day is kinda long for a lunch break.

Remember that the computers are almost certainly company property, and porn sites are notorious for being vectors for malware. At the very least this can be construed as misuse of company assets; a case could be made that visiting a porn site could potentially attack the entire company network. (And I've seen plenty of company networks that aren't properly secured.)

On top of everything else, porn is a special case. There are things you don't do in the office because it will cause waves. You don't talk politics. You don't talk religion. You don't look at porn. It's so likely to cause trouble that it doesn't matter who in the debate is right or wrong; it's going to cost the employer work hours from fallout, and it's their prerogative to ban it as a result.

Depends on where you work. If you work at a porn studio, you'd better be looking at porn, or your boss will get mad at you for goofing off again.

Remember that these aren't just any ordinary joes that are in trouble for looking at porn at work.

(...I want a 'porn flap'.)
