How can they just sit there and take orders having seen what might come to pass, and how it seems like that event is close to happening... what with an increasingly creepy Kay and all saying she's going to save our poor girl in the tank there then yelling she'll never let her out?

I suspect that Kay might be pulling a Dr. Godan here, after all, all red life isn't really real acording to her.

Humans think they are self determining, but they very seldom are, they respond to authority, to Greyback, just like any ape does, with obeisance. Kaye, for all her faults, is a mysterious, high tech authority figure, her uniform is her strange seeming species and her status as leader, and the roles have all been carefully set by her from the moment of meeting our crew members. She knows these things too.

However, sometimes people can only be pushed so far. It takes a lot... but if there is ever perceived mistreatment of a harsh enough type, or over a long enough period....

The point that it feels like you've been trying to push for quite some time is that Kaye underestimates Pho's awareness of social manipulation. He is a trained spy, and he's been observing her with much more interest than she seems to be aware. I suppose what I'm saying is that it seems that the "humans follow roles" rule is much less true if the humans are consciously aware of who is pushing them into what roles, and Pho is trained to recognize this.

As for Pho... Well, we know this Kaye is the exception, and this Texto is the exception, what about this Pho? As averages collect together, what percentage of normal 'sensible' crew prevents Kaye from leaving? Maybe they're all exceptional, and only because of the highly unlikely state of them ALL being so exceptional, they were the only group to leave...
