Ask the smartest people you know.

Postby Quaeras » Tue May 26, 2009 11:55 am

Sarcasm is a fun tool, but I'm being totally serious here.

You people are, from a general intelligence standpoint, the sharpest people I know. You also, a a collective, seem to know really nuanced information. Whenever I stop by to read the forums, I'm always impressed. See, for instance, the virus thread.

I have a little tidbit-y question that's been bugging me for a while, and I feel like this might be a good place to ask it.

There's a term that's used to describe the use of symbolism in situations where it's being obviously violated in overt perspective. For instance, an occupying soldier carrying a flag that says "freedom", or burning books while preaching enlightenment. Those are the examples that come to mind.

I came across this descriptor while reading an article a few months ago about why gothic lolitas are often pictured wearing crosses. The article posited that the imagery was used to depict a severed past with Catholicism, often specifically catholic school, and complicated feelings therin.

I cannot, for the life of me, remember this descriptor. The word 'diaspora' comes to mind, but that's not it.

I've rifled through google a bit, but searching for a word you don't know on a word based search engine, when your search terms are so vague, tends to produce little more than frustration. I've even used all the holistic memory tricks I know.

Anyone care to pull this word out of thin air for me?

Do you think it started with /dia-/? That might narrow it down.

It probably didn't. I'm hoping for a vocabulary deus-ex-machina really. Thanks for thinking about it!

For some reason the word "ambivalent" comes to mind... but I don't think that's right either.
Maybe the word you're looking for is "ambi... something".
If this last post seems ridiculous, please disregard it. Thank you. ;)

I know what you're talking about; it's like a social version of anachronism... *puzzles* It's on the tip of my tongue, and I can't come up with it either. ^^() Incongruity? Irony? Juxtaposition? Blast it all. Let me ask some other people who might know. :P

Edit: Something's telling me it starts with dys- or maybe dis-.

Can you remember any more keywords from the article itself? It's probably still out there somewhere.

Disparity sounds like a likely candidate. But what about Dischord? PS. Hail Discordia...
EDIT: I think I might have it. Is it Dissonance?

These are really good guesses!

Sadly, it's a word I had *never heard before* this article. I'll recognize it instantly.

I really should have bookmarked it.

You guys rock for trying!

Hrm... dichotomy, maybe? If a soldier were burning books while preaching enlightenment, the relationship between his actions and the values he was preaching would be a dichotomy.

That's why I was thinking the best course of action would involve using other, known keywords to find the article itself.

Hey, I just had a thought, Quaeras.
What you're looking for sounds a lot like juxtaposition. Are you sure that's not the word you're after?
If not, then maybe a synonym of it would be what you're wanting.

As for helping you out with this, hey, why not? Some of us here really like our puzzles :P !

So I obviously did a poor job describing it, but here's the word. I'm going to pretend it didn't take me two years to stumble into and break my nose on it.

Pfnar. :P

That is slightly different from what I was thinking it was, but I see what you were trying to get at.
Also, dayum, two years to work it out? I'm happy you got there in the end! ;]
