Hot Topic

Postby Tychomonger » Tue Jan 22, 2008 1:49 pm

No, not the mall store.

The very cute hippety hoppity Uni icon which is used to show "hot" threads looks the same when it has been read as it does when it is unread. This makes browsing a little more difficult.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.

Thirded. Would it be possible to make it wearing the glasses if there were new posts in it and not otherwise?

Yes there needs to be some way to tell if the posts in a hot topic thread are new or old just by looking at the uni.

The problem might be reduced if the "hotness threshold" were higher. As it is, more than half the active threads in Generic are "hot," which seems excessive.

I've been wondering what all the different Uni icons meant. Is there a legend somewhere that I've missed?

Jennifer,

We really need a way to see what hot topic Threads have new posts in them...

Just adding Sunglasses to the dancing Unis would work.

I don't think that it's important, I can orientate myself by the date and time,
as it was in the old forum. So I'm more often as a guest here.
Only if I log in I'm irritate, the time is now different, because I had choose the middle european standard time.

Yes, but one of the functional design elements that make forums successful is knowing which ones are and which ones aren't new. Having to juxtapose new posts via time stamps and relative time of your current location is a DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD NOT BE LAUDED!

Sorry, but when you spend two or more years as a software quality tester, things like this tend to crawl under your skin.

What's the big deal? I log in, go to the main Board Index, and click the tiny "View New Posts" link. Then I click into threads that catch my attention. Uni icons have very little to do with it.

I just click the tiny Uni icon next to the dancing, sunglassed, or whatever large icon, and it automatically takes me to the post made most recently after I last viewed the thread.

And I do this for all threads 'cause I'm obsessive like that. (Interestingly, I've managed to avoid being that compulsive with the Dwarf Fortress forums.)

It'd be nice if the little Uni icons were about 2-3 times larger. It took me forever to actually notice them...I was clicking on just about everything else.

The "Uni icons" are just things you pick when you create a post.

I don't even pay attention to them, I just look for the "new post" button that sends me to the first post, or new post.

Clearly not talking about the same Uni icons here.

THAT...that's the tiny Uni icons that need to be larger and more distinct. Not huge or anything, just not so tiny.

I think they stand out noticeably, but thats just me. Anyway, for instance in that SS you took, the infinity sign is just a thing picked by thingofthing. The only meaningful big Uni's are when he has/hasn't sunglasses and when he is jumping.

All I'm saying is that they need to be about twice as large. I overlooked them for quite a while, and I still misclick on adjacent links.
